Stop 16: Franklin County Florida
County Seat: Apalachicola
Formed from Gadsden and Washington Counties.

***This county is on the panhandle part of Florida along the Gulf of Mexico.

*** Industries important here are commercial timber and fishing.

*** Creeping up in importance with those just mentioned are tourism and retirement due to several rivers and state parks and islands.

*** Native Americans inhabited here for 12,000  years!

*** It was named for Benjamin Franklin.

*** During WWII areas of this county were used for jungle training by the military and the coast was used for amphibious training.

*** This county includes part of Tate's Hell State Forest.

*** The word Appalachicola comes from the tribe with that name which includes in the word's meaning "people" and "on the other side of the river".

*** During the Civil War Western Florida was occupied by Union Forces.

*** More than 90% of Florida's oysters are harvested from Appalachicola Bay.

*** Dr. John Gorrie has a monument here in his memory. He was the inventor of artificial ice.

STOP 15 FLORIDA: COLUMBIA COUNTY

OK... Fellow Postcard Travelers...
Back on our  internet journey to all the counties in the United States.
We are making stop 15 in Columbia County Florida.

Established in  1832.
Formed from Alachua County.
The County Seat is Lake City.

*** Founded in 1958 The Columbia Amateur Radio Society formed and still exists today.

*** Osceola National Forest can be found here.

*** The site of Lake City was a Seminole village: Alpata Telophka (Alligator Village). By 1830 a EuroAmerican town named Alligator could be found in this county. In 1859 incorporated it changed it name because the story goes that the mayor's wife refused to hang her lace curtains in her home (where she had recently moved to ) in a town named Alligator!

*** The only major battle of the Civil War fought in Florida: Battle of Olustee  was fought near Lake City in February 1864.

*** Early in the 20th century Lake City was an important railroad junction.

*** By 1950 turpentine, lumber and pulpwood were a major part of this county's economy.

*** Don't miss Alligator Warrior. They say he was the most famous resident of Alligator Village. Check out the festival held every year..

We have arrived at Stop 14 of our 3,007 stops in EVERY COUNTY IN THE UNITED STATES~

*** COUNTY SEAT: Madison (same name as county)

*** Named for the fourth President of the United States, James Madison.

***One of if not the most famous voice in our music spent part of his life here:
Ray Charles 

*** Colin Kelly also grew up here in this county. He was one of the first army officer pilots  in the Far East with the WWII B17. This Flying Fortress pilot flew bombing raids in the first days after the Pearl Harbor attack. He was one of the first American heroes who sacrificed his life to save his crew when they were shot down in combat.  

*** A native of Greenville Geno Hayes is an American football linebacker who has played for the Tampa Bay Bucs and the Jacksonville Jaguars.

STOP 13: FLORIDA: JEFFERSON COUNTY


This is our Florida Jefferson County stop #13 of our 3007 United States counties we will be visiting on our Lazy Recliners Postcard tour!
Hope you are enjoying these visits. I sure am! I am learning so much about each of these counties!
This Florida county formed in 1827 out of Leon County.

*** Its county seat is Monticello.

*** It was named for the third President of the United States, Thomas Jefferson.

*** The town Monticello was named after Jefferson's home in Virginia, Monticello. But they are pronounced differently. This town pronounces it:
Mont-i-sel-o.

*** This town has The Perkins Opera House that still features musical performances, theater productions and musicals.

*** Jefferson County is the only Florida county bordering on Georgia and the Gulf of Mexico.

*** Lots of Native American information here at the Letchworth-Love Mounds Archaeoloogical State Park. You will find preserves of Florida's tallest prehistoric Native American ceremonial earthworks mound 46 feet high.

HAMILTON COUNTY FLORIDA
Formed in 1827.
County Seat: Jasper
Formed from Jefferson County.


***It was named for the first U. S. Secretary  of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton.

*** It has a total of 519 square miles. Can you find it on the maps below?

*** The Old Hamilton County Jail and the United Methodist Church in Jasper are on the National Register of Historic Places.

*** Its major industries moved through the years from cotton....to turpentine...to lumber...to tobacco...to now phosphate mining.

*** Jasper rests on land thought to be originally the site of the Miccasukee (Mikasukis) Indians. Interesting Indian information on this area:....Check it out... Chief Billy  Bowlegs... Seminole... Treaty of Paynes Landing...  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jasper,_Florida

STOP #11 FLORIDA: WALTON COUNTY



Here we are fellow postcard "all US counties" travelers:
STATE: Florida
COUNTY SEAT: DeFuniak Springs
1824
Formed from Escambia and Jackson counties.

*** This county is where the highest natural point in Florida is..Britton Hill @ 345 feet.

***This county  was named for George Walton the Secretary of the Florida Territory from 1821 - 1826.

*** Interesting settlements...Scots migrating down from the Carolinas and an indian named Sam Story...Dominickers...  Check out this link for more interesting details:

*** Here was established one of the first Presbyterian Churches in NW Florida and it is still a functioning parish!

*** Hilly terrain different from a lot of Florida ...As you can see on the map... borders Gulf of Mexico and Alabama.

*** The county seat was founded by railroad officers and was named after vice   president of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad: Frederick R. DeFuniak.
It was settled as a final destination location.

*** And here the Florida Teachers Education Association was formed in 1886!

*** The Walton -DeFuniak Library built in 1886-87 is the oldest structure in Florida built as a library and still serving as one.

ORANGE COUNTY...USED TO BE CALLED MOSQUITO COUNTY TIL 1845.

ITS COUNTY SEAT IS ORLANDO.
IT WAS FORMED IN 1824 OUT OF ST. JOHNS COUNTY.
THE AREA TO THE SOUTH OF  ST JOHNS BECAME MOSQUITO COUNTY IN 1824 AND ENTERPRISE BECAME ITS COUNTY SEAT.
IT WAS RENAMED ORANGE COUNTY IN 1845.
AMERICAN ADVENTURE
EPCOT CENTER

*** Named for its main product : oranges...but severe cold in recent winters  and diseases have destroyed a majority of orange groves . Orlando population growth has moved into a lot of what was orange groves.

*** This county is located along the Interstate 4 corridor which is the "swing part of the state" in elections.

*** Orlando was nicknamed "The City Beautiful"

*** Tourism...Tourism...Tourism:
Disney, Universal, Sea World, Gatorland, Wet'n Wild, ...conferences...conventions to name a few.

*** Orlando is the 7th of 10 most visited theme parks in North America.

*** Many notable athletes and famous other people were born here or have lived here during their lives: Shaquille O'Neal, Wayne Brady , Warren Sapp to mention a few.

STOP 9: FLORIDA: NASSAU COUNTY: SOMALI WILD ASSES, OGEECHEE MOUNTS AND MIKHAIL BARYSHNIKOV

Yes, these three have here our next stop of "Postcards Journey through all 3007 counties in the United States " connections!

Which is our Stop 9: Nassau County in the state of Florida. Fernandina Beach is the County Seat. This county was established in 1824 out of Duval County.

*** It was name for the Duchy of Nassau in Germany.

*** There is lots of tree farming, trucking and pulp production in this county.

*** Lots of interesting topography info here. Ogeechee Mounts which are very large earthwork mounds have been discovered here.

*** Fernandina Beach is known as the "Isle of 8 Flags" because it is the only municipality in the U.S. that has flown 8 different national flags.


*** David Levy Yulee was the first U.S. Senator when it became a state.

*** The White Oak Plantation has a long interesting history of animal conservation/preservation. There are 200+ animals and 20+ species.The Somali wild ass is only one of MANY animals at this location. This location is private. It was purchased by Mark and Kindra Walter a billionaire and wife  who own the LA Dodgers  in March 2013. It continues to operate as a wildlife preserve. Mikhail Baryshnikov has a home here. President Clinton has visited here.

*** This county was named for the Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon.

*** Tallahassee is the county seat and state capital.

*** Two of Florida's major universities are here: Florida A & M University and Florida State University.

*** Residents have the highest average level of education among Florida's 67 counties.

*** In the 1850s - 1860s this area was a cotton kingdom.

ESTABLISHED: 1823
Formed from St. Johns County
Included in it are the islands of the Florida Keys.



*** 87% of the county land area is on the mainland and is part of the Everglades and is virtually uninhabited.

*** 99% of the county's population lives in the Florida Keys!

*** This county was named for the 5th President of the United States.

*** The Monroe County Public Library was South Florida's first public library.

*** Key West is the southern most city in the continental U.S.

*** Immigrants from the Bahamas were called Conchs.

ESTABLISHED: 1823
Formed from Jackson County

*** Gadsden's western border with Jackson County forms the boundary between the Eastern and Central time zones in Florida.

***Gadsden is Florida's only county with an African American majority population.

***This county was named for James Gadsden of South Carolina who served as Andrew Jackson's aide-de-camp in Florida in 1818.

*** Jerri Mock resides in Quincy. She was the first woman to fly solo around the world in 1964.

A blogger buddy mentioned in one of his blogs today that a friend of his has visited EVERY county in the US.
I emailed back asking if he really meant EVERY county and he said yes.

According to the USGS there are 3007 counties in our country.

Got me thinking... that would be a fun Postcard Traveler trip!
So here we go... you are invited.
Since we are not limited by road travel we can go as the postcards flow!

We're  starting in Florida... :
Escambia County first stop.
Love it over there:
Pensacola is its county seat...established in 1821...One of the two original counties.

We almost moved there before we decided on the Tampa area.
Beautiful beaches.
Don't forget your suntan lotion.
